The main purpose of this paper is to review the recent literature refereeing to the collection, event detection and analytic methods and techniques that have been applied in analyzing social media content and twitter content in particular. Twitter is a social media service with micro-blogging characteristics and semantic structure that allows the storage of high volume of user generated content including spatial content. Twitter is an amazing source of volunteered geographic information, suitable for researching in various scientific fields of the social sciences and geography in particular. This paper presents an overview of recent publications referring to research using twitter data and analysis of geographical information within twitter data. Special attention is paid in methods of data collection, statistical analysis, mining, visualization and credibility of the twitter content. Moreover, a review of various twitter applications for tweet analysis in different research fields of the social sciences is presented.
